Memphis weather is hard on roofs. Not "kind of hard" — genuinely, measurably one of the toughest climates in the country for residential roofing. We sit at the intersection of Gulf humidity, plains hail, Midwest cold snaps, and Mississippi River wind patterns. Every season throws something different at your shingles. Here's a season-by-season breakdown of what's happening up there.

Spring — Hail And Severe Storms

March through June is hail season in Tennessee. The metro averages multiple hail events per year, and golf-ball sized hail isn't unusual. Hail damages shingles in two ways: it cracks the surface granules (which protect the asphalt from UV) and it bruises the underlying mat. The bruising often isn't visible from the ground, but it shortens the shingle's life by 10–15 years and creates pathways for leaks down the road.

Spring also brings straight-line winds from severe thunderstorms. We've seen 70+ mph gusts lift ridge caps, peel back rows of shingles, and tear off entire sections of flashing.

Summer — Heat, Humidity, UV

Memphis summers regularly hit 95°+ with 70%+ humidity. Roof surface temperatures in those conditions easily hit 150–160°. That heat bakes the asphalt in the shingles, drives volatile compounds out, and slowly turns flexible shingles into brittle ones. Combined with constant UV exposure, this is the biggest reason Memphis roofs don't always make their 25-year rated lifespan.

Ventilation matters most in summer. A roof without proper attic airflow cooks from below as well as above. We see premature shingle failure all the time on homes with sealed-off or undersized soffit and ridge vents.

Fall — Wind, Falling Debris, Leaf Load

October and November bring strong frontal winds and the first ice events of the year. Falling branches from oaks and maples — especially in older neighborhoods like Millington, Collierville, and parts of Bartlett — can puncture roofs or knock off ridge caps. Gutters fill with leaves and start backing up against the roof edge.

Winter — Ice Dams And Freeze-Thaw

This is where a lot of Memphis roofs fail. When attic heat melts snow on the upper roof and the melt refreezes at the cold eaves, it builds an ice dam. Water backs up behind the dam, finds its way under the shingles, and leaks into your ceiling. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles also crack sealants around flashings and shrink the rubber boots on plumbing vents.

We get more emergency calls during the January ice dam window than almost any other time of year.

What You Can Do

The best defense is a good install. That means proper attic ventilation (soffit + ridge balance), ice-and-water shield extended well beyond code minimum at the eaves and valleys, impact-resistant shingles in hail-prone zones, and gutters sized to handle heavy spring rain.
